How to Host the Perfect Clothing Swap “Party” | Greenlist

Let’s be real. We haven’t been to a (proper) party in over a year, and BOY do we miss it. Raise your hand if you’re in the same boat! 🙋‍♀️ Luckily, there’s a socially and environmentally responsible option for all of us “party animals” out there.

If you…

  • Are looking for a way to reconnect with friends that *ISN’T* a boring video call or the usual happy hour
  • Want to shop for some new items, but are on a budget (aren’t we all?)
  • Just want to give your wardrobe a nice refresh

…then this is for you! Bonus points if you have great style.

Introducing: the clothing swap party.

AKA, your new weekend plans. Step aside, virtual happy hour. You’ll thank us later 😉

So…what exactly is a clothing swap?

It’s exactly what it sounds like! A clothing swap is a way for you to get together with friends and build a brand-new wardrobe, without breaking the bank. Oh, and did we mention it’s eco-friendly? How convenient is that?!

I’m in! How do I get started?

Like any good party host, you’ll have to start with the basics. First, create your guestlist. For optimal swapping, you’ll want to gather a group with a wide range of personal styles. One of the best parts of clothing swapping is reinventing your look — at no cost to you, or the environment! (Ever been shopping and bought something…um…“experimental” only to return it the next day? No returns needed here!)

You’ll also want to invite friends of all sizes and shapes to be inclusive to all of your guests. Fashion is for everyone, after all!

Help! What types of clothes should I swap?

Are you guilty of purchasing something that you’ve only worn once since? Well, we believe that the best returns are the ones that don’t happen. We also believe in only wearing what you love.  With a clothing swap party, you can “shop” guilt-free!

Whether they’re new with tags on, old, or somewhere in between, give your friends a range of items to choose from that are all still in good condition. Grab those jeans from 2009 that are good as new. Or that dress with the tags still on. And while you’re at it, dig up that one shirt that’s been hiding in the back of your closet. It’s time to give them a new home!

Done! What’s next?

Set up your event “space.” Whether you’re safely gathering together with your friends or still hanging virtually, you’ve come to the right place.

If you’re taking the virtual route, you’ll want to set a time for a video call. Hold up your clothes one by one, or better yet, strut your stuff in a fashion show — living room style. Then, get to swapping!

Or maybe you’re having trouble finding a time to get the whole gang together? We feel you. If you’re the social media type (or you just have a busy life), consider creating a clothing swap Facebook group or private Instagram page. This way, you’ll still be able to swap and engage with each other, without any time constraints.

If you’re getting together with your fashionable friends in person, set up a space for each person where they can showcase their goods. Just like a mini shop!

Now, set the rules.

As a baseline, you’ll want everyone to bring the same number of pieces, and encourage your friends to take no more than they brought. This ensures that there are enough items to go around and keeps the whole group engaged during the swap.

Next, set your “currency” so everyone is on the same page. This is where you can get creative! You use a “token” system by assigning everyone the same number of tokens and price everything based on value. Or, swap items one-for-one the good old fashioned way. Anything goes!

Lastly, put the finishing touches:

Snacks? Check. Wine? Yes please! Whatever makes you smile — add it to your online cart and enjoy the party!

Now…Ready? Set? SWAP!*

*and don’t forget to tag us in your new outfits 😉 We can’t wait to see your new looks!

XO,

Green Team
